How so? I am a military family member and a disabled vet. How is this insulting?

It means he wasn’t perceived as someone capable of greater responsibility and leading larger numbers of troops.

In corporate terms, a Major is like a manager-level, maybe a director at a small company. Lt Col is like a director at a big company, Col is like a VP or Division leader, General is like a VP at a large company, and you can go up in corporation size from there.

They just put this man in charge of about 2 million people. When you add up all of the Armed Forces, National Guard, and the civilian staff in the DIA, NSA, and all of the other defense agencies and staff on military bases, that is what it comes out to.
