My friend is a retired head coach from the Big 10. Decades of experience. Started at a mid major in Chicago.

His AD questioned him as to why he didn't let his team members join frats, including the walk-ons. The frats had complained, as well as alums. He related that after a long period of observation that many of the guys who entered frats were good kids, but the culture when they got together caused quite a few to go off the rails, sometimes seriously. When you have a full complement of scholarships it is much easier to implement this rule (no D1 scholarship athlete should be in a frat). The AD backed down and my friend prevailed. I think my coach friend was ahead of his time and except at Greek bastions such as those in the SEC, frats will be diminishing. The melting pot phrase above is accurate.

I’m not the PP, but there is a difference between whether or not you find something morally objectionable and whether or not something is illegal. I was shocked myself to learn that the age of consent is 16 in 30 states, including MD. A 16 year old can get married if they want.

This is one of many reasons why the police don’t want citizens trying to take the law into their own hands. These men lured a guy to their house thinking they were catching a pedophile, assaulted him, spit on him, demeaned him, and it turns out the guy wasn’t doing anything illegal, even if what he was trying to do is morally objectionable to most people.

Sounds like most of the perpetrators were young. This would be the perfect time to use restorative justice to hold them accountable for their crimes, while also providing the victim with closure and healing.

I was sympathetic to the plight of the victim until learning the victim was there thinking he was meeting a 16 year old boy for sex.

If that’s true, then this changes things greatly.
