my kid sent 1st quarter grades to every school regardless whether they asked or not. They had most As with a couple A-. They have been accepted to every school applied, including UVA, who did not explicitly ask for it. I don't think this would work for ED but definitely EA.
I was nervous when my DC did this based on some of the responses here but it worked in our favor.

Only the semester grades are official, and in our case, won't be available for any RD application.
