I inherited around $2.2m when my dad passed a couple of years ago. My mom is turning 80 this year and has about the same, plus a house around $500,000.

I imagine less than 500k. I won’t inherit a thing. They are only 70. My mom has Parkinson’s.

My dad like $200k? He had a small pension but died not long after retirement.

My mom, probably just her small pension. She lived in a low cost of living area and her pension was enough to survive. Luckily she remarried to someone better off and they have a nice life.

I don’t know and I don’t ask! They are definitely HNW, maybe UHNW, but it’s not something we talk about. The only thing I do know is that they have a charitable trust, of which I’m a trustee, and there is over $5 million in it. And they have two very nice homes. They are very generous with me, my siblings and all the grandchildren so it’s not like they are hoarding it.

yeah, basically this. I supported my parents for 20+ years before they had to go into memory care. Mom helpfully died three months before the money from the sale of the farm (that I had paid for) ran out, dad had died the year before. I think they cost me around $700k over the last 25 years of their life, all told. Social security paid them about $2000-3000 a month over that time. I miss some things about them but I don't miss their inability to handle money, at all.

My mom lives off her SS checks, around $1,800 per month. Otherwise, she has $150k-200k in cash and investments, but that's earmarked for her kids. She spends most of her time gardening, and enjoys being frugal.

I don’t really know.

Based on real estate they inherited, my parents are worth 2M. I know they have other accounts but they don’t share information about them. They also own their own house worth another 1M.

Our NW is about 2M and they make fun of us for being poor. I don’t share our NW publicly either but most of it is not in real estate.

I have no idea how much my parents have. We have never discussed money. They are 80s and I am 50s.

My lower middle class mom had about 100K in retirement accounts, 30K in a HYSA and a pension and social security when she retired at 70 and was a renter. When she died at 82 she still had 80K in her retirement accounts. Seriously impressive. I paid for extras like the newspaper and cable but she paid all of her other bills.

My mom had about $130,000 at retirement and $110,000 at death.

My husband and I have about $2M including home equity.

What are the expenses during that 25 years?

Expensive living. New cars, lots of travel, and a lot of magical thinking. We won't live that long, it will work out, you only live once. And they give me grief for feeling the need to save aggressively and budget.

$40K a year is expensive living?

Both parents alive at 80 ish. Around $15m or so. Dad has a pension of around $100k and still works a bit in consulting making probably another $100k or more. Both grew up middle class, but mom was on the poor end of middle class and dad was on the higher end of middle class. But neither one came from money. They inherited $150k when my grandma died (when my parents were close to 50) but they were already rich by then.

DH and I have net worth probably around $8m in our late forties. DH grew up super poor and got not a penny of help. My parents helped us with some core things like paying for my law school and gave us an interest only loan to buy our first house. But we probably would have got to this regardless. I hope to be able to leave to my son what my parents leave to me - if not a lot more.

My mom had a teachers pension that she converted to cash when she got cancer diagnosis at 60. So we got $200k when she died. And a house worth $40k.
