Or the women were having sex with upper classmen and not other freshman.

Here’s the answer.
All a woman has to do to date a top-tier guy is to look good and be willing to have sex. While it may take some effort to maintain weight and resources to dress and look cute, it’s doable for many women.
As for guys who want to date a top-tier woman, they not only need to look reasonable, but they need to be successful. Being successful in one’s career - in other words, having power and money, but mostly money - is not necessarily easy.
Looking good and taking care of yourself is a one person job accomplished by yourself. Having money and career success takes time, ambition, smarts, time, and the right opportunities. That is much more difficult to achieve and why fewer men can date top-tier women.
A perfect example of this dynamic is Bezos/Sanchez. Bezos is a nerd, but he’s a billionaire, so he gets to date Sanchez. Sanchez, while moderately successful, just needed to show up with her curves and be ready for action to get Bezos.

I highly doubt that most women are seriously looking for men that fit this profile because themselves they don't meet whatever criteria men expect them to have. Just because some women say they want these so called "high value men" whatever that means, is not an indication that they believe they can actually get these men.
What do you mean by "get"? They "get" these men for a few dates, a few lays, maybe even for a few situationships. Many women will have experiences with extremely attractive men while the same is not true of men.
You are comparing a journalist to your friends. There are plenty of pick up artist men who have experiences with attractive women.
If you just ask normal women like your mom or your sister if they had these experiences, it will be a lot more like what you see with your male friends.

That's not true. First we are mixing apples and oranges. Women naturally have an easier time to attract all kind of men. And if makes sense because women invite men as opposed to men inviting women. Women have a lot more to loose if they have sex with the wrong guy for example. This is something that men don't understand.
