Reading and video games are valid hobbies.
Try to add in some exercise by going on a walk with the family at a nature area, or hang out at the river. I think as long as he's getting outside he will be fine. If he's gaming online with others that's a plus for the social aspect. School is plenty of socialization sometimes.

He might love a career in game development. Fiction and games go well together.

only thing my kid did in 7th was a travel sport- though it was pretty intensive. began extracurriculars in high school

You don’t play sports because you have friends who do. You play because you like to play. Does he have friends who he plays video games with in person? That’s socializing.

It's crazy to me that now, not doing a bunch of extracurriculars equals doing nothing.
