Right but your ‘good time’ is a bad time for children and most likely your child. Take a moment and recognize how selfish that makes you sound.

Having worked with a number of clubs (front office and coaching) and watched way too many clubs a couple of things I’ve noticed:

1. Not all parents behave terribly but those that do really can sour an entire season. The tone and behavior goes beyond what should be acceptable in children's sports. Particularly with the racial and sexist abuse towards players and referees.

2. To be fair it isn’t just parents- coaches can also act terrible as can players. On the coaches end the clubs and state associations need to do less protecting of those that behave in this manner. On the players end-if the behavior isn’t accepted in schools why should it be anywhere else?

3. I think why parents get a bad rap is because they are the crowd at a game and there is this perception that because they are a crowd they can do whatever they want.

Dad on my DD's team (U11) encourages his DD to play rough "until she gets a card" to, you know, test the limits. He said "I'd rather her use soccer to get her aggression out and get a yellow card for kicking someone on the soccer field than kick some kid at school."

You sound guilty as well. I guess you can't really tell that there are other adults around you NOT yelling because you can only hear your own voice/thoughts.

If you take offense to people evaluating others (especially one so public as a sport where people perform) and having thoughts about them, then I think you may have a very rosy view of human beings. Also, this post is about parents acting like fools not what their private thoughts.

Oh I don't know... my kid did travel soccer until he dropped that to focus on hockey. Hockey parents are intense, but almost always in a really positive manner. I've never heard them lay into the refs or coaches or other kids in the way I've heard soccer parents do. Hockey parents will cheer for a good goalie stop from either team, they'll get excited when any kid scores a goal even if it's not their kid, they'll keep cheering when the team is down by several points. I literally heard soccer parents yelling at the kids from their own team or saying a coach should pull a kid and crap.

Watching a U18/19 ECNL Match recently. One team's parents were CONSTANTLY yelling at the ref. "You missed a push! You missed a push." "He is pushing him." I'm like WTF??? These players are grown men and many will probably be playing in college in less than a year and mom and dad are out of their chairs stepping on the field screaming at the ref that their baby got pushed and no foul was called. I thought I've seen it all.
