Yeah, I know someone who lost an eye to shingles (though there may have been an unrelated weakened immune system at play, I dunno). But it’s no joke.

Not true. Pregnant women are vulnerable and people who had either no chickenpox infection or a weak one are vulnerable .
I got shingles in college after being around 5 little kids for 3 weeks who each got chicken pox. So this same virus in shingles can infect a immunocomprised person.

Calling in sick because you have shingles would be appropriate. Will the world collapse if you don’t go to work? I mean this kindly. Stress may have helped bring this on and it’s important to take care of you. Sounds like a Netflix on the couch time. Good luck.

I've been hosing myself down every few hours with lidocaine spray and I'm surviving the day so far! And talking to a few co-workers this morning, they both mentioned acquaintances who had it under 50, so I guess it's not entirely uncommon.
Go get the antiviral topical medicine! Also get some lysine. It can get so bad, don't wait. Also change your diet, no nuts, beer, etc.
