There are some really interesting responses here. Especially the turning point of 9/11 that many are pointing to. And as a person who will not vote for Trump, I agree that we started to go down a bad path then.

With the introduction of tsa and the patriot act and the general suspicion that has sprung up, it’s been awful. In general the United States overreacted to 9/11 with Iraq and Afghanistan and spying on Americans and the overgrowth of a security government.

The post 9/11 security government has been expensive for taxpayers and intrusive. In combination with citizens united we have acquired a very dc centric society that is really pushing legislation that benefits the few insiders.

I would agree that reversing that and removing the zeitgeist of suspicion and fear and greed would be good for America.

I just disagree that Trump is the answer.

Things under the Democrats are not getting better.

They are in my USA of facts. Crime is down. Markets are up. Unemployment is down AND the participation rate is up. Yes inflation is high, but we had high inflation without the good stuff in the 80s. Yes we have two wars, but our soldiers aren't there, and we lost many marines on foreign deployment in the 80s.

80s were fun! And race relations were great then as reflected by appreciative pop culture. America was a big hug. The only thing we had to fear were the Ruskies, and yes, that was scary but it united us .

Was also the decade of AIDS and gay people were heavily discriminated against. There’s that heart wrenching story of the woman in Little Rock who took care of more than 1000 dying AIDS patients whose own families disowned them and had no one else to be with them on their deathbed or claim their bodies for burial.

This question has been asked numerous times.

K - 12 schools provided a solid education. High school graduation was something to be proud of. College wasn't life or death. You could marry, buy a house, start a family, achieve a nice comfortable life on very little money.

Most Americans enjoyed a high standard of living. There wasn't a huge wealth gap. CEOs didn't expect to make 400 x the amount of their average workers. Corporations invested in their local communities.

There was also a lot of white flight by Baby Boomers who fled the urban centers to create suburbs. The tax base went with them. The wealthy whites in urban centers sent their kids to private schools.

It's fascinating to look at the yearbooks of urban public schools.

Some people are stupid and blame civil rights and feminism for the downfall of the American Dream.

Almost no one paid those taxes on a personal level. On the other hand corporate tax policy did mean that companies gave more benefits to employees and there was more investment in technology. Look at Bell Labs, Xerox Parc, or IBM Research Labs which were in part a result of tax policy.

Today we have lousy work life ballance, an economy based off intangibles that can easily be disrupted, a (legally) drugged up population, tons of neighbors who are isolated from one another with no sense of community, and if you are a service worker, lousy job prospects with poor benefits.

but we have iphones and LGBT acceptance so i guess its a fair tradeoff.

So what policies are Trump proposing to get us there? Because tariffs and deporting migrant workers won't.

My take is those two are exactly what maga want. IME, aside from the nazis, the other maga are people who feel they and their kids can't compete today. The Democrats should take heed and try to take some of the edge off what we used to call 'globalism' in the 80s.
