The per capita murder rate in ward 7 was 10.9X higher than the average for the US in 2023. Even if the crime is not as bad as it was in the 80's and 90's, the crime rate is still unacceptably high. The per capita murder rate for DC as whole is also unacceptably high at around 7x the national average. Most people complaining about crime (in DC) are not fear mongering, they are justifiably upset that DC is failing to protect residents, prevent crime, and sentence violent criminals. The per capita murder rate increased 2.5X from 2013 to 2023.

And it was because of, sorry to say it, “woke” ass policies that focus on leniency for crime. The USAO not prosecuting. The city council letting people speed and keep their licenses, or shielding criminal records up to age 26 or letting them out early with the “2nd look act” and “youth rehabilitation act”. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that progressive policies with a “holistic” approach, or stupid “restorative justice” instead of swift and strong punishment, and fostering a climate where criminals know they can just get away with things and not go to jail increased crime.
