NP here. His situation sounds very much like something out of Les Choristes (which is an excellent film) re an orphanage or "boarding school" for "troubled" boys post WW2 where families just dropped off their boys if they didn't feel like taking care of them. Some of the kids were rowdy or discipline problems, some were actual orphans but many had families. Unfortunately situations like Delons were common and tolerated at the time.

Really? Many kids and adults from broken homes want to see their parents together and without the dysfunction. I hear it from kids in our schools frequently. I've also heard adults say the same.

NP. I think his mindset was probably that the dog would be so confused and sad without him, it was a kindness to put him down. But I’m glad his family didn’t follow his wishes and that the dog is safe.

Recall also that he was not a well man for the last few years and it's entirely possible his mind was slipping already when he said this. Anyway, I'm sure it was more of an expression of affection than a clear intent to euthanize the dog. I don't see how this could ever have been seriously considered.

PP here. I'm not supporting him. I said IF the dog were old. Sometimes, sadly, family members can't care for elderly dogs; and they get turned into shelters. I would never want that to happen to my rescue black lab.
