No, it's been long debunked that you need to do that.

Nope. I’m usually connected to Wi-Fi anyway but some planes it kicks off below 10K. I leave my cellular on so I can connect soon as cell signal comes back which is usually around 3-4K ft.

it's not pointless, it saves your battery life

Why don't people fly with backup batteries? They're cheap and small and good for multiple charges

Always, but to save my phone battery.

I only do it if I remember and to save the battery, but I sometime forget. On a recent flight i received a text from my mom while in the air.

Anonymous wrote:Engineer here. You should shut off or use airplane mode. Otherwise, your phone is going to constantly try to ping cellphone towers as you fly by them at 500mph and that's a huge battery drain (when doing an initial ping, it uses more battery power then once a connection is established).

There's also the being a good citizen part of it -- the cell towers can get a little overloaded when a phone is moving that quickly between towers, affecting the service of those on the ground.

As for the part about cellphones complicated the airplane's avionics, that's pretty much a myth. Otherwise, we'd hear of terrorists showing up with 20 cellphones in their bag, threatening to turn them all on at once.

This. Though I will say, as a pilot, I make sure I'm in airplane mode when it looks like we'll be flying an approach to minimums. Hey, no one said we have to be logical ALL the time!

Yes, am terrified if I don’t the plane will fall out of the sky. Only partly kidding. Ok not really kidding.

Agree. Read a book or a magazine. Take a nap. Talk to your spouse if they’re there. We don’t ALWAYS need to be connected.

The ignorance here is unbelievable. Airplane Mode doesn't disable all the phone's communications - it only disables the cell voice/data communications. Wifi and Bluetooth remain enabled when in airplane mode.

Divorce is the answer. This kind of rule following will become unbearable the longer you stick around.

My pilot friends turn phones to airplane mode, so I do also.

?? It doesn’t affect the pilot’s comms.

If there is no free wifi, I don’t use airplane mode because doing so will not allow my wireless headphones to connect.
