That’s a lot of names. Just put a relative’s name and phone number from out of state.

Yes, once that happened. Once. You know what happens at my school? They call and don’t reach me because I’m pooping or on the other line or maybe in a work meeting and the number doesn’t pop up as being from school, so they don’t leave a message and IMMEDIATELY start calling the emergency contacts, who also don’t pick up right away but would check a message or see a text. Because it’s 2024. So they fly through the emergency contact list when all of us are just sitting around, unaware that Larla needs to be picked up because she barfed.


This happened to us ONCE TOO! For whatever reason DH and I were both on work calls and didn't see the phone buzz and no message was left. They zipped through my parent's landline and didn't leave a message, to our friend who texted us, and we both responded INSTANTLY- yeah we're both here. We'll go get them. It was ridiculous. Stop and think, staff person. Think how people and phones actually work.

Make an effort to meet some neighbors. Take some treats over.

I can't imagine working at home and not knowing my neighbors.

I would ask a classmate's parent if they would consider. Or, I would give out of state family/friends names and numbers. I would not stress myself with this at all.

Just add two random people you sort of know. The school is not going to call them. I have an 11th grader and an 8th grader, and in their entire lives no preschool or school has ever had to go beyond calling me or my husband.

Are you new to the area or just the school? I used our realtor when we first moved here. Now I use my neighbors. But I actually always offer to be the emergency contact to any new families at our school. We have a lot of military families new to the area and I know what it’s like to not have someone to put down. So I make myself available. Perhaps check with the school and see if they know of someone who’d be open to helping you out that way?

Are they asking for addresses? How do they know if people are local? I have used my brother, who lives hours away, but I know in the case of an emergency, he would find me.

I agree with the poster about how schools come up with no caller ID and don’t leave a message.

Don’t feel too bad OP. It happened to me this year as well. We also need 4 emergency contacts and have no local family. We’ve used neighbors and a family friend couple. Over the summer, the neighbors moved out of state and the couple divorced with husband moving out of state. I added non local siblings to fill in and will try to get to know the new neighbor.

I would use relatives even if they are not local. They will figure out how to contact you or your spouse. I have also used my non local manager who knows all of my contact info and also my co workers who might be able to help.

And single people newly in town. Many single people do not have children.

Happens frequently also at MD offices.
