Not sure how long it's been since you watched gymnastics-- they do much more difficult tumbling skills now which means fewer "stuck" landings but more twists and flips and blind landings.
The scoring also encourages them to go fir harder tricks even if they can't do them perfectly, because of how start values and execution are calculated into the final score. For instance Simone Biles does a vault that has such a high start value that as long as she completes the rotations in the air she could probably sit the landing down on her butt and still make the vault final (assuming her second vault goes okay). She didn't do this-- big hop back but stood it up -- but she could have and it might even have been advisable since she was nursing a calf strain. Better to sit the vault down to avoid further injury since this is just a qualifying round.
