Everyone is talking about these extra scholarships that will be an added expense for schools. But they are forgetting about all the extra revenue that is also coming their way as a result of this new ruling. Schools agreed to add all these scholarships in exchange for participating in the revenue sharing from media deals from football and basketball. We don’t know how this will all shake out but know that overall there will be more money coming to schools not less.

How do scholarships really cost a school money anyway? Maybe a marginal amount but nothing of note. If for example a Big 10 or SEC school has to offer 14 more women’s soccer scholarships in order to remain competitive, all they’ll do is just accept 14 more students into the school at full price to make up the difference (the application demand has exploded). Or raise tuition marginally to cover it. Or cut some other program that loses money and doesn’t bring much attention to the school. In the grand scheme of things, it’s a minor shell game and really isn’t gonna hit the pockets of these big schools.

I don’t think roster or scholarships make a bit of difference if the sport isn’t even carried at the school. Add to that the recent ruling that athletes can be viewed as employees, thus making employers (schools) liable for injuries on the job is likely to result in many schools just dropping sports altogether. Add to that, that unless the school has a rich alumni like Phil Knight who will bank roll your programs, many schools won’t survive the next round of consolidation, travel and risks of operating at the status quo. Title XI will preserve some women’s non-revenue programs since schools will balance the revenue generating men’s sports with non-revenue generating women’s sports. But schools that carry “Olympic” sports (get your fill this summer) may not be able to continue to carry +20 sports. Soccer is not revenue generating on either the men's or women’s side.

Not buying this take. Things will evolve and it is of course possible that some schools will drop non-revenue sports. Most will not. Changes will be there but not be that big of a deal (unless you are a kid being decommitted). All will be fine.

A Big10 team dropped 3 2025 recruits apparently.

Do redshirt freshman count as part of the 28? I'm asssuming not. So could a school tell a few 2025 committs they'll need to redshirt their freshman year? I realize it's just putting off solving the problem but just curious?

I would assume you're counted on the roster as a redshirted player. A football redshirt, can play in limited games, for example.

From wikipedia: While the redshirt status may be conferred by a coach at the beginning of the year, it is not confirmed until the end of the season, and more specifically, it does not rule an athlete ineligible in advance to participate in the season. If an athlete shows great talent, or there are injuries on the team, the coach may remove the redshirt status and allow the athlete to participate in competition for the remainder of the year.

Presumably you'd need to be on the roster for that to happen.

When it's all over, I hope the cut kids retaliate. If it was me, I'd publish the coach's cell number so that anyone interested in playing for them knows how to contact him/her

Yeah, I'm sure that will help them get picked up by another coach in the transfer portal. People need to realize college sports is a business. Coaches weren't doing anything shady. The rules changed and now they'll need to adjust.

With the draw of an Ivy education, schools have been able to recruit strong players and there have been Ivy teams regularly ranked in the top 25. Competing for players against schools that now will be offering full rides to the entire roster will change the game though, and I don’t think the Ivy degree will be enough to win those recruiting battles.

Kid's Ivy currently has 34 on the roster. Tons of 5-years and lots of transfers. Almost no Freshmen...just 2.

oh and, yes, will be leaving for $ elsewhere

Still pending. Depending on how the judge thinks about ivy league education qualifying as a market, the plaintiffs may win

Schools can offer up to the full roster in scholarships. Most D1 athletic departments do not have that kind of money
