Groundhogs are diurnal, NOT nocturnal. And as rodents, they are much less likely to be rabies carriers.

Bats, raccoons and foxes are the animals most likely to carry rabies.

My father used to shoot them with a bee bee gun.
But we grew up in the country. Also, that’s dangerous and I can’t believe he had that gun in our home 🥺

OMG! Groundhogs, gophers, and woodchucks are all the same thing! There's an even longer list that someone posted a few pages ago but these are the terms you will see the most. They all refer to exactly the same animal.

Groundhogs and gophers aren't in the same family. One is a ground squirrel, the other is a borrowing rodent.

I feel like people may not know the differences between various forms of eastern suburban wildlife. For those who are new in town, here is a brief rundown of some of the smaller mammals you might see. (I assume everyone knows what rabbits and squirrels look like.)

For reference, a groundhog, gopher, and woodchuck are the same thing. It is a diurnal (awake during the daytime) herbivore that is a pest in the garden, but otherwise harmless. It looks like this:



A possum or opossum is a nocturnal marsupial that is ugly, mean, and prone to playing dead if it's cornered. It resembles a giant rat. Stay away, but they are rarely out during the day. (It is not the same as the Australian possum.)



A raccoon is a nocturnal omnivore with rings on its tail, black patches around the eyes, and opposable thumbs which make them very crafty at finding sources of food. They can be mean but generally keep far from humans.
