I hear “get a job over a pay-to-play summer program” everywhere. However, the kids I know last cycle that got into top 20 schools ALL did a summer program. 100% of them. These are not highly competitive, free programs either. Just the regular Brown, Georgetown, NYU, USC type programs. It makes me think colleges like these as it shows intellectual curiosity or rigor or something.

This guy is not credible. He is very complimentary of UChicago. Complete opposite of what some posters who are in the know say about the school.

We have a poster who is in the know about zucchini apparently…

So this guy lacks credibility because he is complimentary of UChicago? Just curious, which posters are “in the know?” And what is the criteria to be in the know? Are you saying admissions officers have commented on this post?

Really, it's great for those who can afford the summer program. Anyone can afford ED if the NPC numbers look good. You can always decline ED if the actual offer doesn't jive or if your financial circumstances change. But, the summer program, we definitely can't afford!

DD took a class at college (not Chicago) and I definitely think it helped when it came time for admissions. She did well in the class, made a great connection with the professor, and the positive experience was the reason she applied to the college. Her professor wrote her a recommendation. I think all of those things were incredibly valuable. And yes we could afford to pay for the summer class.
