My mom is 80 years old, at a “over 55” complex and last night another resident asked her where she went to college. We had a laugh over that. The woman wanted my mom to know she went to Smith. BUT- the really big thing is everyone brags about where their grandkids go to college. My mom bought a t-shirt from my kid’s Ivy to wear around. Lol

+1. No one on DCUM wants their kid to go to a school outside of the T20. Why are you thinking that you are some kind of unicorn, OP?

I’m on DCUM and I wouldn’t have wanted my DC to go to a T20. Luckily she didn’t want to either.

I don’t want my kids to go to a T20. Too much snobbery.

Oh god. Ridiculous. Are you at a MAGA rally right now? It’s one of their talking points…even though Trump went to Penn and all his kids T10/20.

Anonymous wrote:Why is it such a crime to want your child to get into a top school? Obviously “top” can mean different things, but whether it’s HYPSM or Ivies or even T50s, it shouldn’t be a horrible thing for parents to want their children to meet certain academic standards. It’s annoyed when people are attacked for wanting their kids to get a good education.

My hypothesis is that the people criticizing these parents are the parents of children who aren’t high-achieving enough to get into good schools. Otherwise, why does it matter to them so much?

Thoughts?

I have no issue with parents wanting their kids to get a good education but I do think it’s ridiculous that many DCUM parents appear to believe that a good education can only be found at a handful of schools with selective admissions and that their children won’t find academic peers at other institutions. It’s not where you go, it’s what you do where you get there. If you have a bright, driven kid, they’ll make opportunities and find peers whenever they go. And some kids thrive on being a big fish in a small pond as opposed to being one of many at an Ivy. Rankings and prestige just seem to be the primary focus for so many parents. Stop reading U.S. News—there are so many wonderful colleges to discover. (And I do have a high achieving son who is applying to schools that range from single digit acceptance rates to over 80%. I would support him 1000% if he picked the least selective of the bunch. He had such a personal tour and I think he’d thrive there).

Some just want their kids to get into the top school that’s appropriate for their ability. Parents who understand this are happier and less stressed.

You “get” the nuance.

This is common sense, not much a nuance.

There are plenty of non-snobs there, especially when over half are on need-based aid. Some of the most genuine people i know went to T10 or 20

Unless you are sending a 7 figure donation, you really cannot bulldoze this for your kids.

Anonymous wrote:Very few people would say they don’t want a top school. But (a) defining “top schools” as though the rankings are definitive is asinine and (b) prioritizing rank and perceived prestige over fit is unwise.

Sure…in your make believe world since nobody has signed a $50MM NIL deal.

$5MM…makes your kid the highest paid NIL deal to date but believable (and easily verified and searchable) considering the current top deal is $4.7MM.

I apologized as I misspoke Bronny James has an NIL deal at $5.8 million. There is a special person in my heart that has a $3.5 million value by NIL. Stupid kids with hooks! The rest of us suffer!

You know this is all public info, yes?

Unless this is Arch Manning or Livy Dunne’s parent…is it?

Recently I saw TJ and Stuy 2024 decision instagram here on DCUM. It's beautiful to see American dreams came true for these smart poor kids. They worked hard, their parents worked hard, they deserve every bit of it. Not to be ashamed for their combined effort!
