People are oddly obsessed with old money. That is the “correct” type of money and new money is tacky, gross, and should be ashamed. I have no idea why. Old money, by definition, did nothing for it and often the people are dilettantes, but they drive 20 year old Volvos so it is better. So weird.

My parents are rags to riches but do not act New Money. You’re talking about a specific sort of status seekers who are obsessed with keeping up with the Joneses. Not sure why they’re like that. A low self esteem issue perhaps combined with being materialistic.

Donald Trump is the epitome of tacky new money. I think he is the way he is because he's had a huge chip on his shoulder his whole life about it.
