used to be set up and take down were two different slots but now it is 1 slot. concessions does a lot more work bc they have to go to Costco, etc.
That’s not fair when some have four kids and others have one.

Ours makes us volunteer for 4 points if you have 1 kid on the swim team and 6 times if you have more than 1, so there is a lot of resentment with that and potlucks.

The key is finding the amount of money to charge families that hurts too much to pay.
Of course you will get some checks no matter the cost - and money helps for sure - but the volunteer help is also crucial.
We charge $250 at the end of the season if you do not complete your 16 hours (depends on the season and the volunteers, sometimes that changes).
We also lock in several volunteer positions ahead of time, so the ones left to be filled are timers, ribbons, marshall, etc.

If there are unfilled spots before a meet we personally reach out to families with swimmers in the met. "hey i see that larla is swimming in the meet on Saturday. Will you be able to volunteer as marshal?" most will not say no when specifically asked, but they will hide when they receive a general "we need volunteers" email.
We try to avoid requirements because we don't want to exclude families with real limitations, but that is a small minority. Most families would just rather hang out than volunteer during the meet.
