I think people don't appreciate that some of these niche sports are dominated by international competition.
NP and Squash mom here. I'd hope that anyone spending $30K a year on squash training is aware of the squash landscape at the college level and whether their child has any prospects of even playing at that level. Basically, your child has to be a top 50 junior player in the US (in their graduating year) to get recruited at a decent school and at least in the top 20 to be recruited at any Ivy.
That seems easy considering not many people play or can afford squash

11 yo competitive figure skater:
$20K classes
$2500 for ice time per year + strength training and off-ice training (I am not sure how much it is per year),
$1500 for skates and blades, ~ $500 for a dress, club fees(~$250), and
competitions ($150-$250 competition fees + coach (depends)+ travel costs), it could be around 7 competitions per year.
