Whenever I’m craving dessert and don’t want the calories to count, I make my ice cream sundae into a milkshake. And I add a shot of Kahlua for good measure! Surprisingly, despite counting calories fastidiously I have yet to lose any weight. Must be genetic or something.

Can you not be fat and drink? Yes.
Can you drink alcohol and still lose weight - sure.
The difference is physical fitness (at a decent level) is not really possible if you drink regularly after your mid 20s or so, males maybe early 30s.
I’m in great shape and know a lot of adults who are also. Most drink. Not daily that I know of, but I would say on weekends, a couple glasses wine sat and or sun. That is totally fine for most.
I would hope this is the level of “regular drinking” the person you quoted was referring to. If so, that person is an idiot.
Of course some weekend wine is fine. It’s attempting to drink a decent amount nearly every day or every other day that would impact any attempt at any kind of training that’s the real problem.
Drinking a “decent amount” daily means you are an alcoholic which affects pretty much every aspect of your life.
