This is very true at the younger ages.... we were a .500% team until we got a stellar goalie...(or a tall girl who wanted to play goalie all the time and was decent at it)... we immediately went to a .900% season! Talk about the impact of 1 key position in the sport. It can make a huge difference in the younger ages.

this... my kids team is fairly strong, but our goalie situation is not... generally they keep the ball on the other side of the field, but if the opponent breaks through its a good chance they will score

There are two things that aren't mutually exclusive:

1. Knowing what the score is and trying to win each game.

2. Making decisions on playing time and tactics geared toward long-term development rather than winning today.

Well, a bit relevant... at what age do most kids start to care... at what age did the majority of high level athletes start to care... not everyone is a phenome at 9, so only found themselves at a alter age

Well, whether those named athletes cared about winning early or not, they sure were focused on developing

My kid is competitive and hated losing every damn game, We switched clubs, went from top club to middle of pack but we started winning. They started developing and kept getting promoted up. That there is called successful development.

Or, that could be being placed where they belonged at the beginning. Just because they were apparently placed too high in their league or tournaments does not mean they were not developing. It simply means they were not winning. Take the last place team in any division and drop them down a few levels, they will probably win more games. I do agree that there needs to be a balance because it is not great fun for anyone to lose every game, but losing on its own does not mean the kids aren't improving. My son, at U9, was on the top team at the club. It was not a particularly strong team and they lost. A lot. The coach was good though, and he got ahead of that by pointing out metrics beyond the number of goals for and against in games. He sent emails talking about what they were working on (first touch, getting open, talking to each other, using the width of the field, completing passes) and once the parents started to look at that, the improvement was evident. The kids believed in the coach and a year later, everything was clicking nicely. Define development as something besides "winning a lot of games" and you may see it happening.

Guess you didn't read the PPs that made this point (that development and positive growth has some W's to go with it)
