I just had a pool party for about a dozen 8-10 yr old girls. I told the parents to drop off or stay. 3 stayed. No lifeguard and nobody expects one where we live where most everyone has their own pool. It’s normal. The kids all know how to swim.

At this age, when I’ve hosted parties at our neighborhood pool I’ve said something like “Parents are welcome to drop off or stay for the festivities.” But that’s at a pool with lifeguards and rules that are familiar to the kids.

I’m not sure if I would feel comfortable hosting a bunch of kids at a backyard pool mostly because I have a hard time being assertive and it’s so easy to get distracted.

I grew up near the beach and with pools you are an absolute fool not to have a lifeguard

The kids are 10 not 2. These teens aren’t that impressive.

I also haven't been impressed by the teen lifeguards. I have gone in twice to save my kids because they guards weren't watching. I definitely would not rely on them to save your kids or as a substitute for close parental supervision to keep the kids from doing stupid things.

+1 this exactly. A teen lifeguard honestly isn’t that good. I would never rely on one.

My son was 10 and went to a pool party. It was fun. About 12 boys. There was a hired life guard.

Why do you have the word lifeguard in quotes? I have been two parties like OP describes and both of them have had certified lifeguards (both were kids who lifeguard at our local pool and live in the neighborhood).

Because parents can easily watch a few tweens. Come on.

Because the teens are useless and parents can do a better job without the job title. Get it yet?
