Have you ever been there? There are campus security guards all over the place! It was part of what made me hope my kids wouldn’t apply there.
Im confused-you don;t want your kids going to a place that has security guards?
Correct. I don’t want my kids going somewhere that needs that level of a security presence.
I think safety should be determined based on crime vs security-yes, most times they correlate but not always. i wouldnt send kid to Temple but would to Penn (though that is easier said than done LOL).

If people are trawling the neighborhood looking for easy marks then maybe the campus police can lay out some traffic control speed bumps? I saw that in Mexico once. Nobody could go faster than 10mph without ripping the wheels off of the car. That most most most peaceful street in town.
Just a thought
Same. The looking and trawling for blonde white female students bothers me. This could have been my daughters good friend. You can say cry me a river, but that is exactly what is happening here. Why is that okay? Why is that acceptable as some sort of societal payback (not unlike the OJ case)? Y'all are truly sick in the head.
The trawling "yeah, get THAT one" is sick, sick, sick. Good for her for kicking the perp's arse. All parents need to emphasize self defense. Perps do this, because they know they can get away with it. If they get caught, it is nothing to them, maybe a badge of honor. A slap on the hand, and released to keep doing the same thing over and over again, maybe jail - which is three squares and a bed, probably more than they have at home. How much is enough? Because they hate the "rich" students? GMAFB.
Um.... you really don't have any experience with this do you? They rob people all over the city. Anybody with something in their hands (a purse, a box from their shopping, a laptop) looks like an easy snatch and run. If you care look at crime reports from the whole town. Criminals target people they think won't fight back. They were wrong about this girl. But please understand that the next time that kid tries to rob somebody they will be even more violent. Real talk from somebody not trying to sell you a mail order pillow.
Also, "three squares and a bed" sounds like something you learned from a 1950s crime drama. Do you actually think they are doing this because they are hungry? Use some common sense. A hungry man with a gun is going to rob a restaurant and eat that moment, not snatch a purse.
A hungry man with a gun? Are you for real? They have a getaway car in the frame. Watch the video. When I was homeless, I certainly could not afford a car. I didn't go around holding people up. What's your GD excuse, you know so much? What else should we be handing criminals? Our phones? What else? What is next? Are you for real?

The female victim was wrong because she fought back. Could have been killed. She should have just given up her cell phone.

I live in Chicago. There are not enough security guards - and most are not armed.

As a bystander, is it smart to confront someone with a gun because someone else decided to fight instead of tossing them her phone?
Things happen fast. We don't know what the bystander saw or knew. Is he a coward, oblivious, doesn't want to die for someone else's phone? I don't know.
