I would be fine with it if there were two separate sleeping areas, even if one or both are public rooms. But, the girl is 9. Maybe to young now, but in a year or two she will be old enough to be concerned about changes from puberty and increased awareness. So, rather than start something and have to change practices in a year or two, you should establish now that boys and girls sleep separately.

As we have become painfully aware over the last several years now, it's never too early (or late) to start safe practices for tweens. Issues happen when parents do not set up safe boundaries for kids.
