Because they are a top premedical school and Engineering and Optics/Physics. Along with great Business/econ. What do you think International students from China/HK/Taiwan and India (there are a lot of them, I've got a UR student) are majoring in?

Rochester works hard to have a diverse student body, including first gen and international. Also, international are typically full pay, so it benefits everyone (full pay kids means more FA and merit for everyone else)

100%. Rochester has the stronger students and has for a long time. My kid is there. All of their friends (12+ kids, including my kid) were WL at T20/30 schools, many at several in that range. One even got into a T30 and chose rochester instead. Majority of the kids at Rochester have the profile to be competitive for T20 schools and just didn't win the lottery.

That is definately not the case at Pitt. It's a great school but their avg SAT (pre covid) was 100+ points lower.

This---it really boils down to right fit. And for many kids (mine included) undergrad size was key. 6K vs 18K is a huge difference overall

not really- UR's econ (and business) regularly feeds to investment banking/Wall St. Pitt, while good, does not have that reputation - not close at all.

This leans towards Pitt. There’s no getting around UR being a $90k private school and its student pop will reflect that.


Pitt is much better known with enthusiastic alum. I am a PP who said both schools are good. They are.

If you want spirit and more to do in a walkable city, Pitt is better.

UR is not as well known. If you care about rankings---I don't---then you might care that they fell in the rankings. They are right on the water, but you have to hike or take a car to get anywhere interesting. Campus is small and there's not much nearby beyond a hospital, a small B&N, and a few other places. I DO like Rochester, the city, a lot. I am just not sure I'd want to be on that campus without a car.

Depends as to academics. Pitt has a better nursing school.

The schools seem comparable overall.

I am the poster who asked about Miami and Pitt - thanks for your reply. I realize they are very different, just not a combo you see often so thanks for a little perspective. Certainly a difference in sunshine!

Hi I’m the Pitt/UMiami pp. This is an odd tossup in my mind because my own two kids loved their own choice and did not consider the other. I can say DD at Miami was clear that she needed “sunshine and happy people” — and that she got. DS at Pitt sort of views so much of UMiami as “overage” — too much money (even tho he’s not paying), too much fuss about looking good and attention to weekend plans, etc. They both found their people at their respective schools. None of us would change a thing — no complaints about either school.


DP from the one who asked you about it - I'm so happy that UMiami is working out for your DD. My DC is the same in that they need sunshine. We really liked our visit there!

Population of Lincoln, Nebraska: 298,000



Not the PP, but I once spent 6 weeks working in Lincoln for a project. The metro area in Pittsburgh is around 2.5 million. The metro area of Lincoln is like 340K. There is a big difference.

Orlando City is around 300K in population as well, but the metro area is also around 2.5 million.
