Bizarre. “Hey, you can’t stay and watch what you are potentially buying and paying for. You need to leave..” Is that how that went?

Personally, I feel it’s odd parents who don’t stay and watch what will be a super important part of their child’s year.

Their year will be going to tryouts?

I get that the new coach will be at the tryout, but do you still reach out to the current coach to attend practices before the tryout?

Yes bc they’re the one still running the practices and team. But frankly, you can just reach out to the club and they will often direct you to the current coach.

This. A rare few dark horses placements can happen; but that's not common at all. If you show up for tryouts only don't expect anything but a lower team offer.

How does this work in the context of a team that will have a different coach next season? Do you reach out to the current coach of your kid’s year (who won’t be that team’s coach next season) or the expected coach for next season (who is coaching older players this season and may not even be the coach next season)? What if the expected coach for the following season has a very different approach to the game and might look for different things in his players?

Or you can pay to try out like at DC Way.

You are probably the parent who coaches their kid at practices and games and then dissects their performances on the car ride home.

Let’s be honest, the answer is, “I’m overly invested and want to see how my kid stacks up against the competition.”

That's not how they are presented to the general public. Clubs don't list on their website that parents should reach out to coaches ahrad of time, go to practices etc. They all pretend like the teams are decided at the tryouts.

They should be honest with people on how many slots per team were truly available per team prior to the tryouts so people don't waste their kids time.

This is life. Just like applying for a job. You see it posted, but as an outsiser you may not know the hiring manager already has someone in mind.
In club soccer, if you're in the know, you know to go to practices before tryouts. My rising U11 plays for a top area team and he's had different kids at every single one of his practices for the past several weeks.

They are also playing up 9v9 and the coach has guested a few kids from the lower teams for games this spring. It's pretty obvious who he's considering to move up next year.
