Forgetting and then declining an application is not such a big deal and it’s handled. I would not worry about it. I know a family with a kid that got in ED and just decided not to withdraw other applications. The kid got additional acceptances to top schools and is now deciding between them. They just don’t care about the ED commitment. It makes me wonder how many other people out there are like that.

PO said his kid DID withdraw the application and the college accepted them anyway. You’re asking a lot of people to follow up on careless mistakes of colleges who clearly aren’t very worried about these scenarios if they aren’t finding ways to avoid them

Not all the schools make it easy to withdraw.
For one school my son tried and the process was so cumbersome just gave up. It was at a safety so we did not feel as if he was messing up another students opportunity or the school's stats. The school had rolling admission and he declined as soon as the acceptance came.

I do not believe you. Please name the school that made/makes it difficult for an applicant to withdraw an application for admission.

Indiana (Kelley, specifically.) There is no button on the portal, nor is an email address listed in the portal. My son hunted through some old emails and emailed the local rep to decline. She never replied and he STILL receives invitations from them, two months later.

How is sending an email hard??

A kid AND his parents can figure out how to email admissions that he’s withdrawing his application. Stop with the “but, but, but there was no way to do it!!! We looked and we couldn’t find the right thing to click so 🤷.”

Since when does one have to attend each school that admits him or her for regular decision? If applicant was accepted ED and then admitted to 100 schools RD applicant simply declines the 100 RD admissions or forget to pay 100 tuition bills. The school will withdraw the applicant in the event of the latter case.

Our kid tried to withdraw from one school after ED and there was no way to do it. We all looked- it was not possible. The others she did. Another school was among those she did withdraw from, and they accepted her anyway!! We also see no way to decline these offers of admission, it appears that you either pay the deposit or you don’t. Shit happens- what can we do?

There are a couple of crazy posters who get so AnGRy whenever someone waits or forgets to decline their college offer.

It's all going to go to the waitlist anyway. If your kid applied to a college where dorms are first come first served, then you knew this in advance and your kid wasn't going to get top choice in the first place, if they're waitlisted now because a few people forgot to decline.

Colleges and high schools understand that mistakes happen. They're not going to ding the next cohort from the same high school.
