My elderly parents won't even let me pay for dinner on their birthdays.

Same. My 80 yo dad always fights my husband or my brother to pay the restaurant bill.

Meanwhile my FIL and MIL are crickets when a food bill comes. And they have $5m of rental apartments plus tons of passive cash flow.

Don’t you all mind going on vacation with your parents? We took a trip with my MIL - never again lol.

This is what we do- invite the grandparents and pay for them to join us

My in-laws have been paying for vacations (including me) since we were first seriously dating when we were 19. They still pay for at least one family vacation a year. It's very generous of them and appreciated. If we can afford to do that, it's what I would do for our kids.

(Vacations with my parents consist of them driving their RV to see us, or us driving down to them and staying in their home, so there's not really costs in the same way)

I am 40. My parents will still foot the bill for things like renting a big beach house and inviting kids + spouses + grandkids. We all drive or manage the airfare on our own, or chip in for groceries/meals out.

Occasionally they will also pay for our airfare to visit them. We have 3 kids and it costs $2,500-3,000 to fly to them during the holidays. We can afford to do that every other year or so (airfare is a big expense for a family of 5 and there are other places we want to travel, so we just can’t pay to fly to them all the time). So sometimes they’ll just offer to buy airfare because they want to see us/the grandkids and it’s harder for them to travel to us. I’m sure I’ll get called a mooch, but I don’t care. It works for us and it otherwise wouldn’t be possible for us to take on 100% of the cost/logistics of travel all the time.

If we invite them we pay, including significant others if they have them.

Day graduate college, love if they join and they don’t have to put money to the house parents rent, but they pay airfare to get wherever it is. They also pay own drinks if drink out.

We'll pay as long as our income is higher than theirs

Yep. Took my inlaws about 20 years to learn this.

Exactly- my mil expects us to pay for everything for her and she has the means.

My ILs pay for everything (hotels, airfare, meals, ski tickets, etc) for usually one big vacation every year for us and our kids, even though we can afford to pay ourselves. They do the same for my BIL and SIL, who are younger, so I think it’s more about equity in their minds. I don’t know if they’ll do it forever, but we certainly wouldn’t be upset if they stopped at any point in time. We do pay for any trips we take to see them (and we go quite often, 4-6 round trip flights a year for a family of 4, so it does start to get expensive.)
