Same here. I’m wondering where these people work. I’m 56 and have been working for a long time. I encountered mean girls only once while I was on a contract with a well-known media company.. They were young/immature and fueled by an arrogant SVP. I was a new mom and too busy with home and work to care.

Here's an example of mean girls in the workplace...I worked with almost all women, our boss was a man. One woman was super hot and posted on her Instagram page (which I didn't follow) a picture of her in a white bathing suit with her legs spread apart and an emoji over the crotch area. Ok, not the most professional but also this had nothing to do with work.

One of the "mean girls" ran into my office and thrust this in my face and was like can you believe what Janice put on her Instagram? This mean girl was like the lieutenant to another woman coworker and they were always scheming to bring the other women down, they had been discussing how they could use this picture against Janice and tried to get me into that. I ended up quitting that job because I couldn't handle the drama (and got a better offer) but they do exist.

OP, sorry about your daughter. The best cure for mean girls is to find real friends, regardless of who they are. In my dd's middle school the mean girls' parents seem to be the ones who are eager for the girls to stay in this group, even though one mom called the group "vicious." Once you stop carrying about who is popular and go for who likes you for who you are then real friendships are made. I have a MS daughter so get that it is easier said than done.

Well, I’m 41, and it hasn’t ended yet, so when you find that out, let me know.

I did not experience it in gov't but definitely see it in my private sector job. It really just takes a few people to get it started.

I think it really depends on the kid and friend group. Oldest has not had an issue to far in MS. I feel like youngest has had issues already in late ES.

You never experienced mean girls in a SORORITY? I call BS on that (was in one, as well). Mean girl central, along with some very nice girls, and that was the case for every house.

Middle school starts in 6th for us. Mean girl stuff started in 5th and is even worse now in 7th. I pray it gets better soon - there are no good options for my sweet DD at her school. She has very casual friends but she has been heartbroken so many times. Just recently a close friend basically “broke up” with her and she is devastated. I don’t know what’s going on.

There seems to be ride in mean behavior during transition years. We’ve seen it at end 5th grade to early 6 grade transition to middle school where new kids come in and there’s jockeying for social status. I saw similar end of middle and freshman entry.
It settled down end of 6th to early 8 grade and I’m hoping it’s similar now for high school. High school so far is a shade better than middle since there a smidgeon of more maturity
