my DS is in a fraternity at UVA and he has never seen or used a "previous test". They do have a GPA minimum and they will put you on probation if you are under it, which includes tutoring and mandatory library hours. So, I think your comment is out of date and just rumor, as usual on these boards.

I should also add my DS has over a 3.9+ so clearly he is neither a "barbarian" nor "stupid".

He could be majoring in "5th century Gallic Studies"...it is possible to be a 3.9 Barbarian .

well he does come from germanic stock... hmmm. Maybe he is in fact a barbarian? No he is a double major in two of the hardest, application based majors at UVA.

I put myself through college, including living expenses. I spend money on what I value. I do not value fraternities, so I will not pay for one.

If my kid values different things like frat culture, he is welcome to get a job to fund it.

Actually, very few of these college students are paying for their education.

A parent cannot control the (adult) student's behavior, but they hold the purse strings and can certainly outline what they are willing to pay for, including not being willing to pay for fraternities or sororities.

For our kids, we have made it clear that frats and sororities are a no go. We ill not pay for them u der any circumstances.

Professional fraternities are a completely different ballgame. We are happy to pay for those.

But buying friends, excessive alcohol consumption and hazing are not a worthwhile return on our investment. If they want to go greek, then they need to get a job and pay for it aling with luving expenses on their own.

Adults pay their own way.

Adults who rely upon someone else to foot the bill sometimes do not get to do all the fun stuff they want to do.

If you just stick with the last two sentences of this with your student, you’ll be good.

I was in a sorority and did sports. Oddly enough, my sports team participated in more hazing than my sorority ever did.

I was in a sorority for 2 years but dropped out junior year because I had too many commitments and the sorority meant the least to me. I also attended a college where Greek life did not live in their houses, and I think that made a huge difference.

I won't forbid it because I don't think forbidding stuff does any good. I hope that by the time my kids get to college, DH and I have raised them well enough to not get involved in the bad side of Greek life. We had one sorority at my college who was every stereotype a sorority could be, down to circling parts on pledges bodies that they needed to work on. I hope that my DD has no interest in something like that and I will 100% feel like I did something wrong if she does.
We also had fraternities who were your stereotype frat bros, drinking too much and doing dangerous hazing. If my DS joined something like that, I'll be disappointed and wondering what I could have done differently.

I'm not going to "forbid" my college kid from doing anything, but we talked about frats and Greek life when he was doing college tours. I tried to be pretty neutral about the pros and cons, though I was a happy GDI in my college years. It did cause a big social division, though – I barely knew any Greek people outside of my classes.

He ended up choosing a school with no Greek life at all, which was fine by me. But it wasn't an element that swayed him either way.
