My comments about "practice for college" were meant to be more about the fact that it's a matching process. I was not saying rejection builds character. (although I suppose some could say that...)

Although we go into admissions thinking we know we have a clear favorite - sometimes we discover that by having the "favorite" removed from our options (via rejection) - that the other options are really darn great. And then after attending your eventual choice for four years, you couldn't have imagined having gone to that "original favorite" afterall.

We had this happen when our 1st grader was rejected from our top choice - that turned out to be great. Looking back - the school we landed at was so much better and we would not have been as happy at that other school in the long run.

It's all about finding a good match. Sometimes the favorite you had going in just wasn't the right match but you didn't know it. Or it's important to recognize that there can be many matches..that are just not exactly the same. It's important to be open to many outcomes...not just focused on one.
