You won’t find many two car garages close-in for under $2M. Downtown Bethesda is very walkable. You should really rent first before buying.

Bethesda is a powerhouse of wealth and commerce, relative to upper NW. it shouldn’t be surprising that wealthy people of all races want to live in Bethesda

OP, depending on your budget, I suggest something close to the red line, at least close to park your car and ride to Bethesda, like Rockville. West of the Rockville Pike there’s some nice neighborhoods, that don’t break the bank. Rockville is a diverse city from both ethnicity and socioeconomic background. Potomac, which is west of 270, is uniformly wealthy, look there if you want a big spaced out house, but you’d have to drive to Bethesda. Bethesda is very nice but market is very hot for a house right now. I suggest renting in downtown Bethesda for the first year close to your job and get an idea of what you like

I went to lunch in Bethesda Row yesterday and it was FAR more diverse crowd of what I would call diverse professionals and diverse well heeled families dining out than in my area of NW DC just down the road. These were diverse people with $$. I was kind of surprised, not pleasantly or unpleasantly. Just used to a sea of white faces in restaurants in NW DC. It was interesting to me how I've become used to that.

It's a function of being close to DC. It would be nice if we could build a wall to keep DC people from coming here until DC figures out that catch-and-release isn't a viable strategy for dealing with criminals.

DC should build suburban to come for DC jobs.

Commuting to Bethesda from SS would be a big decision depending on the specifics of where OP is working and living.

OP traffic here can be really oppressive, and “Bethesda” and “Silver Spring” are big areas. 20 minutes at 10am can easily be 40 minutes and miserable at 5pm. You should really look carefully at commute considerations.
