Chicago is a world class university. It was the rare school that had great graduate and professional schools (business, law, econ, med, ect.) but just an ok undergrad reputation known for grinding things out. The undergrad AO has done a lot to raise its profile.

Perhaps they should use some of the postage costs to shore up their finances. They are cutting programs and delaying much-needed building renovations. It’s a sinking (and very stressful) ship.

This is why UChicago is under financial pressure. Once you kid takes the bait and applies, expect to hear nothing. Same with Swarthmore. Strange, I hadn't seen lots of people getting large numbers of mailings and info from Swarthmore. The top LACs should think about campaigns though since they don't have the widespread name recognition of an Ivy (maybe not nearly to the extent of Chicago though).

Chicago has been outspoken about their comparative financial issues. I give the undergrad admissions office a lot of credit though. They haven't done anything "wrong" like Columbia yet managed to rise to the point that even Big 3 kids were tripping over themselves to apply ED (often ED2 after a deferral or rejection). With the updated criteria, they'll likely be back to #2 in the Chicago metro area behind NW for a while.

Didn’t you guys get a lot of mail from Chicago when you were applying to college? I distinctly remember the same thing. I think a part of it is that they are probably the most reputable school that doesn’t have a brand in the general national consciousness. I wouldn’t have known about Chicago’s reputation for intellectual rigor without all of those weird mailings they sent.

My kid was admitted RD. A kid the previous year from the same high school was admitted RD. Kids similar in profile (GPA, rigor, test scores) to my kid from the same school were rejected ED2.

I am sure my kid is not part of some magical 1%.

Somehow DS25 is on the list twice so we get double mail almost every day!

Anyway this means there are 800-ish spots left for RD admits. With a ton of spammed kids applying.

Two years ago there were 35K applicants total, so this does seem unlikely.

38,800 applications last year. Numbers went up. But I read that Duke's ED applications went by almost 30% so that is the trend this year.
