This is why UChicago is under financial pressure. Once you kid takes the bait and applies, expect to hear nothing. Same with Swarthmore. Nothing until the day before the decision, "XUniversity has set a historical record for the second consecutive year..." - before the final dump letter the next day. These schools are shameless.
Strange, I hadn't seen lots of people getting large numbers of mailings and info from Swarthmore. The top LACs should think about campaigns though since they don't have the widespread name recognition of an Ivy (maybe not nearly to the extent of Chicago though).
Chicago has been outspoken about their comparative financial issues. I give the undergrad admissions office a lot of credit though. They haven't done anything "wrong" like Columbia yet managed to rise to the point that even Big 3 kids were tripping over themselves to apply ED (often ED2 after a deferral or rejection). With the updated criteria, they'll likely be back to #2 in the Chicago metro area behind NW for a while.
