Mine is going to a YMCA camp for one week; a basketball camp for four days; and violin camp for 10 days. There are a ton of other options.
She started with the YMCA one week option and built up from there.
i would hesitate to do ymca if you can afford one of the others op. i'm sure they're fine but it's not like for like.

I went to camp once--three weeks at a WASPy camp in the South. I hated it. I mean I enjoyed some of it but I was terribly homesick the entire time and was so glad to go back home. I begged to never go again and I didn't.

OP, I feel the same! I love being with our son and spend as much time with him as I can (without smothering). He is 10 and really wants to go to camp—we are sending him for 3.5 weeks this year and he could not be more excited. I know im going to miss him so much but he’s excited and I know he’ll gain so much independence. Sleepaway camp is an experience I desperately wanted as a kid and never got to do it.
Responding to this poster about vacationing with kids vs “shipping them off”—we vacation for a total of 8 weeks with our kid every year. Our son wants a sleepaway camp experience and we are willing to let him do it. Why do you think this is an either/or situation?

Some kids don’t take to camp as easily as others but for many it is a highlight of childhood. Well worth it just to have them out in nature and off technology. It’s like a gift from the past.

I wish my kids would go to camp! Not so I can get rid of them, but because it sounds like an amazing experience for so many kids. I would have loved to do it, but I was poor growing up. We have money and our kids adamantly refuse.
