But also, be sure you are comparing costs apples-to-apples. VT is not really $36k. Tuition, fees, room & board comes out to $30k (and we definitely spend less than that now that our son lives off campus). Their published "cost of attendance" includes books, transportation, personal expenses, loan fees. All more IME than we/DS pays.
Umass is a perfectly fine school but on a good day Boston is about 90 minutes to 2 hours from UMass. Do not go there if you really want to be in Boston.

How often is that actually used?
A lot of students do use it, though I don't have numbers. It also means there are a lot more cultural and social events.

Exactly. Consortium is a just marketing pitch, and not used by most students.

Instead we have posters saying the third best state school in Virginia — a tech school at that — is better than the state flagship of the most educated state in the country for, get this, social sciences and humanities. All I can say is have fun in Blacksburg. Not like Amherst is a better town…

LOL a mediocre state school with 70% acceptance rate is supposedly "far superior school for humanities" LMFAO
Per the most recent published CDS data, the acceptance rates are effectively identical at ~ 58%.
DP. Per USNWR, acceptance rates are:
UMass - 64%
VT - 57%
