My DC rejected from T15 (cs major) had the same GPA, IB magnet 1580 SAT (800 math).

UMD honors direct admit to CS with merit.

Had 58 credits going in. Will graduate in 3 years with two degrees, all for < $100k. Not bad.

Congrats!! Direct admit for CS at UMD is a huge deal!

My kid chose Cornell over UMD Honors (with lots of merit). I would have gone UMD. UMD is rated very well for CS. Yes it is below Cornell but not enough to matter.

It’s laughable when you are rich like you. But—this may shock you—not everyone can afford an Ivy, and they can still be an excellent student.

He did nothing wrong.

Not everyone gets in. It’s highly selective, and there are not enough spots.

It could be too many with his major were already accepted or they wanted a banjo player or someone with XYZ award or experience.

UMD is not a safety.

Anecdotally, it is harder to get in as CS major. I know of several magnet CS kids last year with 1580+ and near perfect GPAs, good ECs not selected for honors.

It’s all top notch students. A lot of the honors students go on to graduate school at an Ivy.

The wonderful thing about college selection is it's based on your personal decisions. It's up to the student and family to decide how and where they will end up. Thankfully decision day is not determined by a vote from DCUM. I can't even imagine where my student would have ended up if I had listened to have of the opinions on this forum.

UMD costs less. UMD is more diverse, which matters to many people. All sorts of reasons

this was last year - also direct admit to Smith. 1500 SAT, 4.8 W (maybe 3.95 UW), 16 AP classes, ran 6 figures (revenue) small business selling on ebays etc.
