Of course it is up to the Board, but when it's proposed by an advisory committee, it certainly is a real possibility, if not this year, then another year.

It varies from year to year.

They often threaten to withdraw from TJ. We went through this a few years ago.

Many parents whose kids didn't get into TJ or HB say these programs should be cut.

The SB did not take the BAC recommendation re: TJ in its proposed budget for 2025.

Arl Tech is not trying to compete with TJ. Arl Tech is deliberately different. Folks who want TJ should apply to TJ. Folks who want Arl Tech should apply there.

Last time this was discussed someone chimed in to say that TJHSST has full course offerings in all subjects similar to any of the "area's big high schools", including in language arts, music, etc. and therefore it would be different from what APS considers "programs" (HB, Arlington Tech) which do not have the full scale of every subject or class on site. However, I do believe APS allows students to take classes off site, but I'm not sure how feasible this is with the schedule.

What's the difference between a Governor's school and Governor's academy?

The "Loudoun Governor's STEM Academy" is more commonly called "Academies of Loudoun". Easily found on the web: It's a new school and the same architects are designing Arlington's Arlington Tech campus.

According to the Va DOE, Arlington Tech is the "Governor's Career and Technical Academy in Arlington (GCTAA)". Similarly Loudon County's new program is the "Loudoun Governor's STEM Academy"

So as of this school year Northern Va has three STEM-focused Governors Schools.

Actually, FCPS could not do that without first getting consent from the VA Dept of Education, at the state level. TJ is *administered* by FCPS, but as a matter of state law TJ is the regional Governor’s School.

If you think this is the case, why does FCPS apply annually to have TJ’s status as a Governor’s School renewed? It seems like that would be unnecessary if the state already controls TJ’s status.

FCPS reapplies to be the administrator.

FCPS also owns the building. So if they don’t really to be the administrator it’s not clear the state has any recourse.

A “governors academy” I think is what the program’s website says. It was recently approved by the Va Dept of Education.
