Coming from New York, Duke is still a hot school for top prep school kids, it's just really hard to get in. They'll take big name kids or exceptionally smart kids, with little space in between. It's always worth a shot to apply though, so it's sad to see people giving up hope.

I thought Duke was the "hot" school.

It's a DMV thing. The rest of the country sees Duke the same way vandy, Emory, rice, WashU, etc. are seen.

Huh? Duke has been a T10 for the last 20 years, people just see it as a T10. None of those other schools have been T10.

So?

Lol, no. Southern schools are red hot right now and more competitive than ever. I think people just have given up on some of these Ivy+ schools RD.

Yep it’s so overrated that they earlier received a 30% increase in ED apps

was it not mostly due to an increase in NC applicants due to the new tuition policy?

Anonymous wrote:$90K per year. And if you need it the aid is ok, not overly generous.

They just announced a generous free tuition plan for North Carolina students, I think their financial aid is some of the best in the country. It seems more likely that people are getting told by there guidance counselors that Duke is a moonshot

Most parents can’t keep setting $80 on fire with no potential return so they are telling kids pick ONE sub-10% lottery school for your list and well this year Larla picked Columbia instead to waste an application on.

Would definitely explain a discrepancy between ED and RD.

+1. Most of the students applying have no shot of getting in. Counselors are steering students and families away from wasting their time and money.

What an idiotic response! So Duke suddenly because a grinder last year?
I didn't say Duke is a bad school. I'm simply noting that students are choosing the schools they want based on comments from friends and social media posts. Students are joking about skipping social events to study. Go look for yourself, or better yet, look at the posts with your HS student and ask their impression. Then ask them about the students they know that attend or apply.
