I think it's habit. And it appears to be more of an urban habit than a suburban or rural habit. In my neighborhood in DC, ugh. It was so bad. Not so much in NoVa. When we moved overseas, it was really really bad in the Asian mega city we were living in. Now, we live in a small Midwestern city and it's almost nonexistent.

My Dh used to have the habit of deep clearing his throat and maybe spitting (not on the sidewalk though). Living the overseas mega city cured him of that. It finally dawned on him how completely disgusting and unnecessariy it was.

Dude, give it up. In my 45 years of living on 3 continents in various urban areas, I have overwhelmingly seen more men do this than women. Some things are just not worth debating about. The same way women don't scratch their labia in public. So I have observed a shit ton of men do this. Why do you do this?

Nope. Reasonably happily married but no illusions about men. When our son and daughter were six and four, I had an emergency appendectomy and was in the hospital for two weeks. When I got home he had washed clothes but they were all on dining room table. He put both children in bed with him and only had a bottom sheet and no pillow cases on pillows. All the dishes were clean because they had used paper plates, bowls, cups. Instead of throwing them in trash he washed them and fed the dog and cat with the used paper plates. I never saw him spit on street.
