Why? My rich Jewish neighbor sent his kid Yeshiva University, rich Mormons go to Brigham Young, rich blacks Howard, College is where lots of people meet spouse and get life time friends. [/quote]

I say 10x people know Villanova over UPenn. Never heard of UPenn till recently

Of course my DC has heard of Villanova. We know 3 students there currently and several recent graduates. That said if you’re going to look at Penn for business. I’d also look at Bucknell and Lehigh. Your kid is going to need some targets. I’d also look at Drexel as a safety.

As a mom of a DMV kid at Villanova, they definitely know about it. VSB is highly regarded.

TJ kids have heard of Villanova. They’re not that ignorant.

My daughter went to TJ and was a high skilled performer in crew. Went on to Princeton. I told her not to engage in the you will be working for us in garbage. Although not familiar to some DCUM, which has a group which does not understand athletics, you compete against who shows up, and it does not matter as to the academic background or socio-economic background of the competitors. That is the challenge of competition. My daughter knew I competed against athletes from all over the world in my university days. Sneering about academics is just a built in excuse for losing. Either you are tough enough to really go after it - or not.

Only on DCUM could someone have a kid not know of Villanova. Forget about whether the kid is a sports kid. The NCAA tournament is one of the dominant entertainment events in the nation. Villanova has won it twice in recent years, challenging the dominance of the Power 5 football schools. Certainly an odd circumstance to not to know.

I know of a few high achieving DMV kids that went there after they got rejected from Penn and all the other ivy they applied to. You should nip your son's attitude in the bud since odds of getting into Penn are exceedingly low. So yes, visit Villanova. And some safeties because for some reason everyone thinks they want to go to Penn.

Villanova and Penn don't have a whole lot in common besides being private and in Philadelphia (and surrounding area). For a kid whose got their sights set on Penn, I think there are way better/more aligned safeties.

My kid didn't know about Villanova either. I only knew about bc I was from NJ and a lot of the kids from my high school applied there.

Good school, elite basketball.

Elite in track. The number of Olympians they have had is astounding. I competed against their coach who is excellent. If you want to be world class in this marginal sport Villanova greatly enhances your prospects. You can bet that the sprint and middle distance kids who compete in the thousands at the Penn Relays from all over the country and Jamaica absolutely know Villanova, more than any other school at Penn.
