In most cases the parents are not guilty of any crime and there would be nothing to prosecute. Crumbley is a rare exception.

I do think laws should be enacted that hold parents civilly liable if their guns were used.

These parents gave a 15 year old his own gun. It wasn't a hunting rifle or a BB gun either. The boy could not have purchased a gun himsel. And then when the school called the parents in for a meeting because he had written very disturbing thing, they didn't tell the school the kid had his own gun or check his backpack.

If a parent gave a 15 year old a car in a state in which 15 year olds can't legally drive and the kid killed someone driving it, I'd hold the parent liable for that too.


A childhood friend, former principal, said they pulled in their security staff immediately after the shooting for a "what would we have done, what should we do differently?" They said when they asked the first question, all the officers said in near unison, "check the backpack!"

How was he in no way responsible? Because he remarried, lived in another city, and had little contact with his son? I guess that's one way to avoid responsibility.

DP here. Some cultures are very much against taking prescriptions, and many do not trust doctors, at all. Educate yourself.

Cell phone forensics showed that during one of the many times the shooter texted his mom about the hallucinations he was experiencing, she was taking selfies with her horses. She didn't text her son back.
