Also got into Georgetown.
But 85k to $35k hard pill to swallow
Your kid got into UVa in-state, U Michigan, and Georgetown, is leaning toward International relations/government/politics and your question is
Is the extra $ for U Michigan worth it?
1. No
2. You should question if Georgetown's extra $ is worth it. Maybe.

Hard agree with this. Michigan is a fantastic school. But it has no advantage for someone interested in IR/politics. Georgetown on the other hand does. But if you can't swing $85k, then the kid will do just fine at UVA.

Saying that, the dollar difference and the major would definitely have me choose UVA over any other school costing tens of thousands more per year.
That’s idiotic. It doesn’t compare VA residents. Every VA kid I know- chose UVA.
There is a world outside of VA that doesn’t see these two schools at the same level.
In my opinion, the whole world doesn't matter (whatever way PP think the decision goes), what matters are the opinions of DMV-based employers for getting that first job. Or whatever might be the target geography.
I don’t know about that. I’d prefer to have a degree that travels well. Michigan has a much broader appeal, especially in STEM fields.

Michigan is ~$60k, GU $85-90k and UVA $35k
No brainer. UVA
They are 22-25 ranked. All 3 of them
Whatcha smoking?
Michigan OOS COA = $76K first two years, $80K junior and senior.
Neither Georgetown or Michigan (22 and 21) is worth the $ over #24 nationally ranked UVA. Last year UVA and Michigan were TIED for 3rd in best public university rankings. These always bounce back and forth. Fwiw, all my New England relatives have said UVA is huge at their HS—everyone dying to get in.
Now one is #3 and the other #5. Things change. Your NE relatives are obviously trying to appease you.
