It's not the law in that many places. MoCo added it about 10 years ago, and you have 24 hours after the end fo the snow to shovel. It was snowing last night at 7pm when I was out, so it's not even been 24 hours.

I also think this is an unfair law. There are many people who are unable to do such work, and while they can hire help, it's unreasonable to expect them to be able to hire help and get it resolved within 24 hours.

I'm fine with grass cutting laws since grass growing is not unexpected, and you can easily schedule help with that in advance. But for snow shoveling, if you are unable, then you need to be able to schedule help to come within 24 hours of last snowfall... at a time when the government is actually advising people NOT to be on the roads since.. it was a snowstorm.

"within 24 hours" means "during the daytime, so you aren't shoveling ice in the dark".

Dong buy a property you can't afford to maintain. Grass helps, not hurts. Snow doesn't.

How do I tell my 30 year old neighbor to shovel his side of the street. He is 30 year old and he is very healthy but wont shovel what can we do?

Go to him. Tell him how his lack of action is making you feel. It will be liberating for you and he will absolutely possibly understand and appreciate your observations.

Some real sociopaths on this board. Clearly these are people that are borne without a sense of empathy. Or had terrible parenting. I'm sure these are the same people that never remove the snow from the roof of their car and wait until it turns into a sixty pound sheet of ice that eventually blows into the car behind it.

Calling code enforcement is the right thing to do. Maybe fines will change behavior. And then proceed with some pettiness. Always park cars in front of their house. Let the neighborhood dogs use their front yard. And don't bother picking up because that would be trespassing, right? It's just fertilizer anyway. It'll go away on its own. Why bother.

Calling other people sociopaths because you are too lazy to put on boots and walk in the snow is pathetic. We don’t owe you a shoveled sidewalk. Your entitlement is showing. Buy some boots.

NP here. The civic minded thing to do is to shovel your sidewalk. I had to go shovel my elderly mom’s walk because I would feel terrible leaving it unshoveled. Once the snow goes through a few thaw-melt-freeze cycles walking in boots won’t help. It’ll be an uneven, icy mess.

Maybe there’s no law but it’s what good people do. And if you have a disability or are 80 years old, hire someone!

This reminds me of the thread complaining about bike lanes not being shoveled.

The sidewalk absolutely does not have to be shoveled.

Democratically elected governments all across the country disagree with you.

Majority of the country has no legal requirement for sidewalk shoveling.

Yes!! Why do people not understand this!

Most people do know but most people also do not wait until the ice forms underneath….

We just had 3 DAYS of snowfall and freezing temperatures. DMV usually melts almost immediately after snowfall.

Age and ability have nothing to do with legal obligation.

I couldn't shovel shovel snow when I was thirty due to back and neck problems. Don't assume.

(I lived in an apartment tho.)

It’s the law in DC, too. Everyone on my block shoveled except the house full of 20 something women, who are generally just not nice or neighborly people. The stretch in front of their house is now pure ice.

If anyone really cared, the HOA or city would be doing it.

Pay your HOA to shovel.

?? I wasn’t being sarcastic. My neighbors are awesome and this isn’t an issue for us. Paying the HOA isn’t available, either.
