According to the FB post that started this thread, no one from out of state/country gets into any fraternities or sororities at UVA.![]()
Is that true?!?
That would be in line with UVA's reputation and history, is the point.
But is it true? I don’t think so
Anonymous wrote:Hi is anyone with a kid at UVA following the parent posts on FB? I’m shocked that parents use terms like “top tier” frat and how they can’t believe their kid did not get into a top frat. It reminds me of when I was in high school 30 years ago and there were the popular kids. Anyway I just want to tell them that my kid who never had many friends is loving rush and when I asked him about these top tier frats his response is that the top tier is the one that’s right for you.

Sorry you didn’t get a bid.

Yes, they go through the instagrams to figure out if you were popular in high school, which private school you went to, sleepaway camp, etc. Also to see how you dress, your HHI, etc. This 100% happens at every school.
You're wrong, not everyone wants the top 3. My DD went in knowing she wouldn't fit with those girls and knew she'd be dropped, which she of course she was. She did say they were very nice and she was pleasantly surprised by them. But it is absolutely about wealth and connections in those sororities and at UVA those girls come from boarding schools in the Northeast. If you are not already known to them before rush, you're probably not getting in, even if you're a legacy.
UVA is slowly changing. While Greek life will be somewhat important, it won't be as important as it once was. UVA is getting kids from different backgrounds even out of state kids.

From my uva days, the top sororities were kkg, tri delt, theta, and pi phi. Doubt it’s changed much. Fraternities had a similar pecking order.
How (and why) do you remember that!
I’m pretty sure anyone who went to a Greek dominated school would remember these details. I certainly remember that that top sororities at wake forest in 1999 were KKG, Chi O and Pi Phi. It’s not an insignificant detail of college if you go to a big greek school.
It’s interesting because Chi O is lowest tier at both UVa and VT
the "ranks" are different at every school. Kappa is top at UVA and bottom at another school which I can't recall right now LOL. Chi O is a very southern sorority, founded at U Arkansas, and tends to better in the south where there is a lot of cache to being a Chi O and legacies going back generations.
I know. UVA is a southern school. It’s just considered lowest tier at both UVa and VT. But yes different at every school
KD is top tier at VT but mid-tier at UVa, for example.
It’s all very random.
Definitely random because Chi O is top tier at SMU and it doesn’t get more southern than that.

I mean at my school in the Midwest in the 1980s Chi O was the fat girl sorority. So. But definitely bottom tier in Virginia for some reason.
And SMU? That’s… random.
