I let my 8 year old stay out by herself for hours yesterday. She was with friends at the local sledding spot, and I could see her from the back window.
My almost 4 year old was never left unattended. If I couldn’t be outside, he came back in with me. It’s just too risky.

How is 40 minutes enough to walk 0.5 miles at 4 year old pace dragging sleds, sled, and walk back at 4 year old pace?

8 and 7 fine but 4 is too little for 9 year old to be in charge

I wouldn’t even let my 14 year old watch my 8 year old to go sledding. Even if the 14 year and 11 year old go off on their own all the time. Each time both have come back with major bruising and cuts. Besides, why impose on your older kids to watch the littlest one. They require more attention to do stuff safely which means older kids can’t play freely my with their friends.

Our neighborhood hill also has no trees and no street at the end. However, I know of two children that had to go to the ER over the past couple years from sledding incidents on this particular hill. One had their ear lobe cut open by another kids sled. Another had a potential concussion caused by an out of control kid, snowboarding on the hill and crashed into their head while laying down on their sled.

Even a little older things can go wrong. Sleeding was close to my house and it had hills on both sides. I went down one and someone went down the other one and slammed into me breaking my collarbone. I was old enough to run home alone at age 12. The pain was awful and I remember just running. I don’t know if I could have even thought of a four year old with me.
