If your party has let you down, then by all means, change and vote mind. Voting should be for who support, not for who you think you candidate can beat when the day comes. If that’s what you’re doing then you should stop to think about why the candidate you are trying to disadvantage is such a threat. Ask yourself what everyone else is on board with that you are overlooking in them. That’s non partisan advice by the way. It’s a two way street!

It’s a free country. People can vote any way they want to, thank heavens.

Says someone who bellyaches when voters say they will not vote for Biden.

I consider myself an independent, belonging to neither party. I used to vote that way also, for both Republicans and Democrats. But for the last several years I've voted in the Republican primary for the more moderate candidate (who never wins) and then in the general election for Democrat.

I'll do that again this year. Today I voted for Haley, in November I'll vote for Biden.

My loyalty is to my country, not a political party.

If it's to your country, don't vote Biden, he opened the border to millions of migrants some of which are gangs, spies and terrorists. Do you believe you are immune because you voted D? I was a D until the party became so anti safe (see New Orleans, Chicago, NYC, Philly, SF, LA etc.). 2020s has been the decade of crime be it domestic or foreign. Nobody republican or democrat should compromise the safety of the American people NOBODY! Close the border and remove Pro-crime DAs!

If you’re anti-crime, why would you vote for a criminal?

If you're a Dem as you claim to be, why would you go out of your way to vote against Trump in the GOP primary? Trump is the one candidate Biden has a chance against in 2024. We want him to be the GOP nominee or else we're basically guaranteed a GOP president until 2029. Put your thinking cap on, please.

It doesn’t matter what party you associate with as you can vote for anyone on the ballot, regardless of their party affiliation. You can even write in a name. In fact, if you don’t like the choices, please write in my name.

Can I just show up and ask for the Republican primary ballot in Virginia or do I need to switch my party affiliation to independent or republican to do that?

If you are voting for Haley who has same policies as Trump same exact dictatorship authoritarian garbage you were never a democrat

Pardoning Trump is her talking point six week abortion ban federally social security decreased and well gee term limits she will never leave office once they win both houses and presidency

Why do you do this? Do you do it to try to help elect the weakest Democrat candidate? Is that the point ? Does that seem ethical or fair to you?

Oh wait, you said you were a republican. Never mind about ethics or fairness.

ETHICS AND FAIRNESS!!1!!1

You don't register a party affiliation in Virginia, so you can vote in either primary. Sometimes Republicans have been doing firehouse primaries or caucuses where you have to be registered as a member of your county or city party, but that's usually for state or congressional elections, not presidential.

NP, not registered to any party but generally vote D. Considering voting for Haley in the primary.

It's not because I'm trying to sabotage anything. My first choice is Biden and I intend to vote for him in the general election. But if he doesn't win, my second choice is Nikki Haley. So my vote for her would be to get her on the general ballot, because at least then I could live with either of the options. I REALLY don't want another Trump term.

I actually think that truly open primaries - or better yet, ranked-choice primaries - would bring us less extreme candidates, which would be a good thing. I hate how each party always selects the most outrageous candidate, and then the general election is left with nobody reasonable from any party. So this vote would be my small contribution in that direction. (And probably utterly useless, but at least I can say I tried!)

“Registered” in VA? I didn’t think that was a thing.
