My DH works from home and I do this occasionally to get some alone time. I also usually say that I’m running late because “I just need some time without you” sounds rude.
I would be embarrassed and annoyed if he told me he was tracking me on a routine basis. Apologize, stop doing it, and give him some independence.

He needs downtime when he gets home, not to walk in the door to immediately sit down for dinner because you tracked his whereabouts so you knew the second he'd be home so the dinner would be perfectly on time. I'd find that so overwhelming if DH did that. Give him 20 min when he gets home to decompress while you finish up dinner. Win-win. He gets to decompress at home and you don't have to track him to time dinner.

Nanny here - My bosses do this. I see them sit in the driveway often when they get home. I get it and feel like it’s totally normal. I sit in my car often as well!

If my husband told me he needed some alone time or time away from me or some other BS like that I’d divorce his sorry ass and he’ll be paying me the rest of his sorry life. I’m not to be trifled with with about stuff like that.

Because he is not alone at work. I have not stopped in a random parking lot. But when I changed jobs I noticed my shorter commute made me more stressed.

I entirely understand the need to decompress, but sitting for 45 minutes in the cold dark night? That's wouldn't relax me at all! If he's running the engine all that time, that's a lot of pollution as well.

If he's an introverted type who can't decompress in a coffee shop for 30 minutes, then maybe he can just have a different routine when he arrives home, where he goes and lies down for bit, listening to music?

I don't know, OP, but I find his behavior a tad odd.

I've done this in the past--usually when I want to be alone and not bombarded the second I walk in the door, or just really didn't want to be around people. The times I've done this are the times I wasn't happy with my living situation and dreaded going home. Consider that OP. For the love of god, leave the house a couple nights a week and let the man have some alone time AT HOME.

Go drive there the next time and spy.

You must work from home or not at all. Sitting in your office at work is absolutely not alone time. Heck most people don’t even have offices at work, in which case you need alone time to escape from the fishbowl at work.

My dad does this. His wife won’t let him eat carbs so he goes out to eat by himself and disappears for hours when he enjoys alllll the carbs.
