What are you talking about, crazy person? The pilot and/or flight attendants ANNOUNCE that the flight is preparing for landing, and they ask people to put window shades up for landing.

Let me get this straight. I'm supposed to drug my child with Dramamine -- which makes her sleepy and out of it -- or force her to wear an eye shade for the duration of the flight rather than lowering the window shade when she sits in the window seat, which solves the problem. No thanks. If you feel that strongly about it, book a window seat so you have control over the shade.

This is an absolutely ridiculous debate that reveals how rude and nasty some of you have become. Seriously? You feel so entitled to look out a plane window that you are hostile to a kid who gets motion sick? You are truly terrible, selfish people. I hope you become motion sick on your next flight and vomit for the duration.

This is the most bizarre question I've ever heard

On a daytime flight this fall I was sitting in the bulkhead section. There were only 2 seats on our side of the aisle and my husband was in the other. We were both enjoying the view out the window until a flight attendant popped her head out of the first class section and ordered me to close the shade so that "people can see their screens."

I don't fly often and still get thrilled by doing it (and being able to afford it) but I sometimes lower the window shade because I get hot sitting in the sun, or because I have to work or am watching a movie and want it to be a little darker.

But even as someone who only flies once every few years, I don't get why you care if you can see sky or clouds for the 90% of the flight when that will be all that's out there? I do enjoy looking out the window for takeoff and landing and that's why when I fly, I try to book the window (or get an early boarding time for Southwest so I can nap a window seat), so I can see that. But I understand that if I am not in the window, I probably won't get to see that part and while it's disappointing, that's just how it is.

I try my best to book a window seat so I can keep the shade up. Obviously if there is a bright glare, I would be respectful and lower it.

But I do think it’s super rude to lower the shade during take off and landing. Not only is the view interesting, but I get extremely nervous when we are about to land and I can’t see the ground to expect the bump.

If I could suggest a compromise it would be that window seat person decides, their call, but keep it up during take off and landing, full stop.

They put down their shades because the shades go with the seat. Tell us, OP, exactly where it says in bills of carriage that the entire row gets ownership of the seat!
